Huawei’s Mate 40 is the first smartphone that enables a hardware wallet for China’s digital yuan

Huawei, the second-largest mobile marker in the world has announced that its forthcoming Mate40 smartphone series will include an integrated hardware wallet for China’s central bank digital currency, the digital yuan.

Yu Chengdong, Huawei’s CEO for the consumer business group, said on stage that Mate40 will deliver hardware-level security with controllable anonymity for digital yuan. As a physical DC/EP wallet, it is also said to be capable of initiating transactions in offline environments.

The Mate 40 was announced in October and will be the latest flagship from Huawei, along with the Pro and Pro Plus models, according to TechRadar.

The Mate40 is the first Huawei smartphone to utilize 5nm chip technology, as recently debuted on Apple’s iPhone 12. The technology allows billions more transistors to be packed onto a single chip, significantly increasing the potential power.

China’s digital yuan is reportedly already in the testing stages, as several countries vie to be the first to launch a CBDC.

Back in August, China Construction Bank briefly allowed users to sign up for a digital yuan wallet from within the bank’s own mobile app. The Terms and Servers of the wallet indicated that China’s digital yuan will also come with physical hardware wallet devices.
